Initial understanding of the designs materials with the base being constructed out of concrete to give it the weight to support the counter lever. counter lever to be built out of light weight materials yet still be ridged. working on 3 or 4 stringer/ bearers to give it the strength may have to think about ways to increase the effeciency of the counter lever?
INITIAL DESIGN CONCEPT 4
Final idea and the one I chose what the interaction and deconstruction of the urban environment around Howard Smith Wharves and wider Brisbane area. The design works with two shapes intersecting each other yet still being dependent entities. 1st entity is the land and how it is formed (site ), 2nd entity is the progression through the land 3rd is the urban environment that rises out of the natural environment. This idea provided a lot of potential to allow the user to experience the folie with all senses creating a unique environment that draws people to the site while also giving users of the site a completely new way to experience the site. INITIAL DESIGN CONCEPT 3
This idea plays with the recent floods and history the site and Brisbane have regarding flooding. This idea works on the idea that different flooding events would be shown by water jets that shoot out of the ground to the height of the flooding. with the main axis lines pointing in the direction to areas of major flooding during them times, so the bigger the flood and more area that was damaged the more water would be shot into the air. Could have great effect at night , become a water park/ attraction. Reason why i didn't uses this design was because normal users of the site probably wouldn't interact with the site as every day you would want to get wet but possible could watch it.
INITIAL DESIGN CONCEPT 2
My second idea was to actually incorporate the biggest influence on the site the story bridge. This was done by actually cutting into the pylons and then creating a tensions structure that hung from its side. Firstly if I was going to cut into the pylon (would never work) but i would have to be able to find another way to replace the supports for the building. The ideas were to use a metal bracing structure to transfer the weight out and around the folie then back into the pylon itself. Then from the rebate into the pylon a steel structure would be counter levered out using tensions members, (orange lines representing the cables holding the plate form. Section depicts how users would interact with the folie. From this section i have also incorporated a compression member under the platform that protrudes it to give the structure some strength. Then i played with the form of the cut into the pylon and also the counter lever structure looking for interesting applicable shapes that could reduce the cut into the pylon yet still achieve the same sensation for the user. This was a simple was to come up with shapes for me platform. After some investigation although the ides was solid and would create an amazing sensation for the user cutting into a pylon that supports an immense load is unrealistic and would neglect wider site as it would suggest that the only interesting thing about the site is the story bridge.
INITIAL DESIGN CONCEPT 1
This was my initial idea for a folie that played on the activity already present within the Howard Smith Wharves precinct. This design is purely transition and works on increasing the experience had by the user within the entry and exit ramps but the middle area is provided as a resting location. After Some initial thoughts I found that this design would be too large to fit within the design guidelines. Main sitting area could fit but the approaching ramps would be way to big. Idea of a reaction with its opposite reaction, users heading in one direction go over the folie while in the opposite disappear under. could create an interesting atmosphere while being used.
