Diagrams represents the different sections of the design and the process in which the experience is to be experienced.
Materials Concrete=base structure acts to add weight allowing for the counter lever (rest of the structure) to be supported Steel= modern construction, lightweight, wont add a lot of weight to the counter lever. connection with the story bridge that dominates the site but also the modern urban environment. Copper=roof over the steel structure is copper bands, for aesthetic as is develops over time will change, providing an ever changing environment for the user. Timber= tries to reduce the harsh feel of the site, provides good aging properties so will weather in time creating a changing dynamic. counter lever is incased in timber for a naturel and light feeling. Steel cable= steel cable used as rails to allow for uninterrupted view, wind to pass through while also providing a connection to the wharves. Steel Posts= Used to give the folie a connection to the urban environment within the site context and wider scene. Were connected to the main structure will offer some support to the counter lever but this is a secondary function. Showing the basic concept withing the final product, (HOW IT ALL FITS TOGETHER)
The counter lever protrudes out, its overhang reaching into the walkway encouraging users to engage with the folie. Standing just above head height it provides mixed emotion as you walk under it one of heavy and solid as the structure engulf over you. Then of void and opens up as you engaged with the structure and its materials
The first set of stairs are designed to, initially draw your attention to the form of the solid concrete stair, providing association with progressing through the land rising out of the river through its organic form, then in its mass.
Climbing these stairs a platform opens out big enough for 2 people while having seating it allows the user to experience the end of the solid form to the joining of the floating form (the counter lever). This area is also of transition as the next set of stairs become more structured, giving an indication of the progression into the built urban environment while a change in materials gives the design a softer and natural feel (timber).
Opening out onto the timber platform users experience the spatial qualities of the site from a different perspective while the form conveys its design linking it to the urban environment. Attention is drawn to the steel structure protruding from the ground, on entering the steel structure you step down into the last area increasing the tension as it wraps around you giving you the feeling of closure and safety while also providing a place that feel comfortable that still allows all the natural element to pass through to really engage with the atmosphere of Howard Smith Wharves.
Due to the large counter lever that what created i come up with the idea of reinforcing/ aiding the stringers with a tensioned steel cable to increase the load capacity and rigidity of the structure. The element is then encased within a timber outer shell to give the idea the whole top structure is made of timber. The base of the stringer is attached to a ball joint to allow for the steel cable to assist in the load capacity. Initials idea of how the the counter lever could work, by incorporating steel stringers and beams with the steel cables threaded in between these elements.
